Understanding the Difference: Philanthropy Circle vs. Board of Trustees

At the Acosta Dance Foundation, we value the unique contributions of both our Board of Trustees and our Philanthropy Circle (Advisory Board). While both play vital roles in supporting our cause, their responsibilities and expectations are distinct.

AspectPhilanthropy CircleBoard of Trustees
Legal ResponsibilityNoneFull legal and fiduciary responsibility
Governance AuthorityAdvisory onlyHolds formal decision-making authority
Financial ExpectationSignificant donation encouragedNo specific donation required
Term LimitsFlexibleFixed and regulated
Appointment ProcessBy invitation from senior staff, with advice from the TrusteesFormal appointment through governance procedures

The Philanthropy Circle provides strategic insight, acts as an ambassador for our work, and plays a critical role in helping us grow our philanthropic reach. Unlike the Board of Trustees, members of the Advisory Board do not carry fiduciary responsibility or governance duties, but their influence and support are essential to our mission.
