Performance Group - Community Based

The Acosta Dance Foundation’s Community-Based Performance Group brings together dancers of all ages and abilities to explore the transformative power of movement. In collaboration with the Tanztheater Performance Group, this inclusive programme offers workshops, open rehearsals, and performances that celebrate diversity, creativity, and connection. Participants engage in a wide range of dance styles, from classical ballet to Cuban and Afro-Cuban fusion, while exploring storytelling, improvisation, and collaborative choreography. Each session provides a welcoming space for participants to express themselves, build confidence, and experience the joy of dance in a supportive community environment.

Through projects such as Play in Motion, Paths Taken, and other immersive experiences, the group transforms spaces like the Acosta Dance Centre and Woolwich Works into vibrant hubs of artistic exploration. From short-term intensives to ongoing weekly workshops, participants collaborate across generations, sharing stories, cultures, and perspectives through movement. In recent years, the programme has engaged over 300 participants across a variety of age groups, from children and teenagers to adults in their 60s and 70s, through more than 40 workshops and rehearsal sessions. Performances have welcomed audiences ranging from 50 to 130 people per event, creating meaningful opportunities for community connection and artistic exchange. Across these projects, over 500 community members have participated directly, while hundreds more have attended performances, workshops, and special events. With performances that highlight their creativity and skill, the Community-Based Performance Group exemplifies the Foundation’s mission to make dance accessible, inspiring, and empowering for everyone, while nurturing a lasting sense of connection and belonging within the local community.
